RAVEN

THE black kitten was born under an old shed, where his mama made a cozy nest in the soft dirt so his brothers and sisters had stayed warm and dry for weeks. But he didn’t know how to get back there.

He and his two brothers ventured out because they were very hungry when Mama hadn’t come home for a long time. They’d already eaten the tiny creatures she left for them to play with after milk bar, but then their bellies ached from emptiness.

They’d thought following familiar smells would be a smart thing to do, but found no mice. Well, he did get a glimpse of one, and ran after it, but it got away. And while he’d been on the chase, his brothers had become lost, and now he was alone, except for the voice.

When she first spoke to him, he scurried about looking for her, not believing she could be invisible as she said. Finally, Quark, as she called herself, had just been there, standing in front of him. A beautiful gray cat with a tiny bit of white on her regal face.

She told him to watch carefully, and then she simply faded away. Now he understood. She was a very special cat. Called herself a guardian. Said she only spoke to those needing her help, and rarely showed herself to anyone, but his sheer stubbornness, his refusal to believe, and to listen to her, had made it necessary.

After that, he followed her voice while she talked about always watching out for predators. She taught him to scoot from one spot of cover to the next, carefully surveying with his eyes, listening, testing the air for strange scent. And before long, he found himself at a place full of good-smelling things.

He crept close to one.

You forgot to look around first.

Oh, dear. He zipped back to the branches he’d been hiding under. She was very strict. Just like Mama. He darted a glance all around, then heaved a sigh and started creeping forward again, hoping he’d get to the thing before Quark scolded him again.

He touched it with his nose, and it moved a bit, but the smell was so good he couldn’t be afraid.

It’s called a dish. And it’s where the food will be later.

Again, the later thing. When is later?

There was a soft laugh. I don’t know. You will just have to wait.

My brothers didn’t wait for me.

They did. For a very long time, but you couldn’t find your way back to them, and just kept getting farther away, which is why I brought you here instead.

But shouldn’t I go back to them, to where Mama knows to find us?

She won’t be coming back, youngster. There was an accident, and she had to leave here and cross the rainbow bridge.

Being a smart kitten, he remembered what Quark told him earlier about how she’d gone there too, but still came back to help others. Will Mama be able to talk to me like you do?

No, youngster, she has crossed over to stay.
